Opposition demands manus costings be suspended, 'cancel' deportation orders

"We are calling for a freeze of all immigration flows from Northern Ireland until the full truth is known," Ms Byrne said.

She said the UK's Immigration Minister Stuart Wheeler had ordered a comprehensive review of visa applications from Northern Ireland in the wake of the allegations.

The UK government has already admitted there was an issue in processing of visas from the north and she called for it to be reviewed immediately.

Ms Byrne said there was no suggestion there were any abuses, but had been called for an immediate investigation by her minister.

She also said a number of UK universities were refusing to provide accommodation to students, or to send their own staff there to study, on the grounds of national security.

Labour called on the UK Government to immediately release details on the people charged, and any other details relating to the allegations in Northern Ireland.

She also urged the Government to order a complete and transparent investigation into the allegations in Northern Ireland.

'Numerous complaints'

A Department of Justice spokesman said: "We do not comment on the investigation before it is concluded."

Northern Ireland's Attorney General has opened a criminal investigation over a number of reported alleged cases of police harassment.

The investigation, called Operation Conifer, is looking into whether there are any "possible cases of breach of the Official Secrets Act".

It comes as a video emerged on social media of a group of youths chanting, "We're not British, we're Irish", in reference to the issue of policing.

A statement from Labour MP Stephen Twigg said the allegations should be treated with "great seriousness" by the investigation.

The group chanting for Irish people has been described as a "shocking and disgraceful episode" in the US.

In September, former British Prime Minister David Cameron condemned what he described as "disturbing" remarks made by one of his ministers in a speech about the need for better relationships between minority communities in the north.

In September, a number of local people were reported to have contacted local Police Ombudsman Ross McLoughlin about the treatment of the community they live in.

The Ombudsman has previously said he has received several reports of police using their discretion not to arrest someone because they spoke Irish.
